I have gotten the opportunity to travel to Alaska twice in the last
two years. In March 2003 and made my rounds,
albeit quick ones, of a sampling of the southern part of the state. I
made my way from Seward to Valdez, traveling along Alaska's highways, making
stops in Seward, Girdwood, Valdez, and several others. Two
days of skiing at Alyeska Ski Resort and one glorious day of heli-skiing
were thrown in to
round out the whole trip. Most recently in August 2005, Alaska in
summer was visited with four days of sea kayaking in Harriman Fjord in
Prince William Sound. Wildlife, huge mountains, calving tidewater
glaciers and of course, rain, were all present in abundance.
These two trips have solidified a special place in my heart for Alaska as is probably the case for
most who visit there. My desire to return is strong - perhaps a week-long
backpacking trip would do the job???
